IoT Big Data

The “Internet of Things” (IoT) – internet-connected devices, appliances, systems and sensors – is poised for explosive growth. No longer confined only to computing devices, the internet now uses mobile devices – including phones, smartphones and tablets – so that ordinary “things” like cars, TVs, refrigerators and thermostats themselves now can be “internet enabled”. Internet connectivity will continue to expand, allowing for better analysis of disparate sources of data, giving new insights and informing decision-making processes. The key will be applying Big Data technologies and techniques to the massive amounts of data that will be generated from this mass of internet-connected “things”.

“Big Data” can be defined through the “3V’s”:

Volume  – amount of data generated, stored and analyzed, determining the level of insight that can be obtained from that data.

Variety – type and nature of data. In the past, data was structured and from a single source, fitting simply into ‘columns’ and ‘rows’. Data is now increasingly sourced from a variety of sources with many different formats.

Velocity – the speed at which data is generated and processed. While previously data was generally uploaded via a daily ‘batch’ process, today data is measured in the thousands or even millions of transactions per minute.

Processing stored IoT data for analytics and intelligence is identified as the responsibility of the IoT Big Data processing function. The IoT Big Data Processing function also provides related Developer API Access Management to control access to the intelligence and analytics by implementing authentication, authorization and access control to ensure privacy and security, with a division between analytics and intelligence. Both analytics and intelligence process subsets of the mass of IoT data retained in the IoT Big Data Store.
